Of Self-Made Men and Women

The problem with right-wing conservatives is their

exaggeration of the accomplishments of the wealthy, as if

their successes, their achievements, their acquirements

were their own attainments.  And these conservatives claim

to be Christians.  Self-made individuals are a fantasy,

according to Christian teaching.  The Apostle Paul wrote:

‘What do you have that you did not receive?  And if you

received it, why do you boast as if it were not a gift?’

Just as Paul condemned personal righteousness based upon

good works, so also he condemned personal affluence based

upon hard work.  A wealthy Christian, if he or she is

humble, will be grateful rather than boastful.  A wealthy

Christian will not say that they have earned their wealth by

their hard work, and therefore they deserve to keep their

wealth, rather than share it either through charity or

taxation.  There are a lot of Christians who have not a clue

what their sacred scriptures teach.  The prosperity gospel

is not a biblical teaching.  An honest self-view will forestall

any boastful exaggeration, whether you're a Christian or an

atheist.
