Of Government and the Capitalist Economy

“Governments may be solely concerned with the better running of ‘the economy’.  But the description of the system as ‘the economy’ is part of the idiom of ideology, and obscures the real process.  For what is being improved is a capitalist economy; and this ensures that whoever may or may not gain, capitalist interests are least likely to lose.”

Ralph Miliband, The State in Capitalist Society, 1969
